Gilliam Week: Directors' Shorts - Terry Gilliam - Miracle Of Flight
Gilliam Week rolls along with another of the director's early shorts.
Concurrent to working on Python, Gilliam found time to provide some animations for The Marty Feldman Comedy Machine (1971-’72), a sketch show overseen by the likes of Larry Gelbart, Barry Levinson and Spike Milligan amongst others.
It was here that Gilliam got to produce his most sustained piece of animation to date, Miracle Of Flight “It was a total free hand to do what I wanted. And the nice thing was that it wasn’t linking material. I could do set pieces, tell little stories.”
The series was shown on US network TV and as such marked the first time Gilliam’s work had been seen in his native America. This particular piece also found subsequent life theatrically as a short, released in British cinemas in 1974 (note the period British Board of Film Censors “U” certificate at the beginning) and was later incorporated by the Pythons into their live shows (as such, it also appears in the Hollywood Bowl movie.)
