Song Of The Week - Shane MacGowan & Sinead O'Connor - Haunted

How can you not love a song that features the line “First time I saw you standing in the street/You were so cool you could’ve put out Vietnam”? Impossible not to.

Today, to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, we have two of Ireland’s finest with one of their finest moments. Shane MacGowan wrote and recorded Haunted originally with The Pogues back in 1986 for the soundtrack to Alex Cox’s Sid & Nancy. A decade later, he re-recorded it with Sinead O’Connor – after she had ripped up the Pope’s picture on SNL but before she became a strangely tattooed priest. It was used as the opening music for the long forgotten (for a reason – it was pants) Sandra Bullock-Denis Leary vehicle Two If By Sea (aka Stolen Hearts.)

But forget its filmic history – it’s just a cracking good song.

Happy St Paddy’s Day! Happy Birthday Jack!
