Still Alice - This Moore Rocks, This Movie Really Doesn't
Dir: Richard Glatzer, Wash Westmorleand
Starring Julianne Moore, Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth
Here’s the deal here – Julianne Moore won Oscar last month for this performance. But for all the wrong reasons. Yes, Moore is very good in this movie. But she was also very good (better, even) in Maps To The Stars earlier this year. Admittedly she wasn’t dying of a disease in that one, just dying from her own emotional vapidity. They don’t give awards for that (or for anything that truly satirizes Hollywood.)
There’s no denying Moore is strong here – but the movie itself is just so weak. This is a Hallmark “Disease Of The Week” flick given an unexpected (and undeserved) theatrical run, buoyed by a star cast who are given little to do but stare at the sick lady and wipe away a tear. Baldwin walks through it (what a waste!) and Stewart remains the charisma vacuum that she always is.
It’s also a really cheap unpleasant looking film, directed with all the flair of a home movie. The best than can be said for it (Moore aside) is that it has a relatively brief running time, so, unlike its heroine, we only have to suffer a short while.
