Mowgli Goes Moody

After much delay – in part to escape the shadow of Jon Favreau’s phenomenally successful Disney adaptation – today we get our first look at Andy Serkis’ take on Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. And it is, as reported, a much grittier vision of Kipling’s classic – and we don’t just mean the songs are missing. Serkis’s version, despite all the motion capture on display, is surprisingly much more realistic looking that Favreau’s with actual sets and locations as opposed to nearly all CGI. But yes the animals do still talk, thus we hear Christian Bale’s Bagheera, Cate Blanchett’s Kaa, Serkis’ own Baloo and, best of all, Benedict Cumberbatch’s menacing, dragging his paw Shere Khan. Rohan Chand has the title role.

Plus, there's a whole bunch of pics to glom over.
