Roma Opens The Firing Shot In Venice

Netflix is now one step closer to finally securing itself some Oscar glory with Alfonso Cuaron’s acclaimed Roma picking up the Golden Lion, top honours at the Venice Film Festival.  And so begins its run…

Other winners on the Lido included Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite picking up the Grand Jury Prize – as well as Best Actress for Olivia Colman. Willem Dafoe was named Best Actor for his turn as Van Gogh in At Eternity’s Gate, whilst Jacques Audiard landed Best Director for his western The Sisters Brothers. Jennifer Kent’s follow up to the Babadook, The Nightingale, earned her a Special Jury prize, whilst her young lead Baykali Ganambarr landed the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Young Performer, whilst the Coens walked away with Best Screenplay for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.
