Song Of The Year No. 2 - Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - Holy Mountain
If you were to make a playlist (and we did) alternating tracks from this year’s Liam solo debut and Noel solo third, you end up with a really good missing Oasis album. And towering above all on that imaginary comeback record would be this simply gorgeous slice of old school psych rock from Noel, that has the man sounding like a combination of “not a care in the world” and “couldn’t give a fuck even if there were.” With his mate Weller on organ, an impossible to put down penny whistle solo and a song about a girl who “smelled like 1969,” – and a song that sounded like it came from there - this was the older, wiser, wittier Gallagher brother back on his very finest form, delivering a song that was in many ways the simple sound of pure joy, but with a thundering backing from his High Flying Birds.
Would have made the highly sought after Last Word Song Of The Year number one spot were it not for the next one – (Come back tomorrow – after all, it’s Christmas tomorrow. You don’t want to unwrap things too early!)
Only one more thing to say – in the immortal words of Bob Dylan - “Play it fucking loud!”
Hit “Play” already. Damn!
