Hanks Gets His Cardigan On
Tom Hanks has a reputation for being kinda “nice” Fred Rogers, host of perennially beloved children’s TV show Mr Rogers Neighbourhood – a pre-Sesame Street tale of utopian American inner city life – had a reputation for being kinda “nice.” So it makes perfect sense that Hanks is playing Mr Rogers in a new biopic, You Are My Friend.
The film will be directed by Diary of a Teenage Girls’ Marielle Heller and is based around a meeting between Rogers and journalist Tom Junod, assigned reluctantly to write a profile of the star. Shooting is due to begin this September – no word yet on who will land the rather plum role of Junod opposite Hanks in cardigan mode.
Mr Rogers has also just been the subject of a documentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbour? which debuted at Sundance last week. He was also the subject – along with Hank Williams, SNL and well, pretty much most of the American South – in a great song by Loudon Wainwright III a while back, Hank and Fred. Have a listen below –
