Orson Welles - Was He All That Good?

Awards pundits have been talking up the Netflix-fuelled completion and release of Orson Welles’ final film, The Other Side of the Wind, for some time now. But what are they really talking about? Are they talking about the film itself? Or merely the notion of the once great Welles being back in the conversation?

At his finest – and his finest includes The Magnificent Ambersons, Citizen Kane, A Touch Of Evil, Chimes At Midnight and The Lady From Shanghai – Welles was genuinely a force to reckoned with. But the majority of his career was wasted, through Hollywood’s lack of respect or his own malfeasance. (Those sherry ads aside – they were great!)

Either way, presuming this is a player – by virtue of its central “player” – seems a bit previous. Well done to Frank Marshall and co for getting this finished after all these years, but on the strength of this first trailer, we don’t think it’s going to be troubling Uncle Oscar next year. Still, it will be interesting

The Other Side Of The Wind hits Netflix on November 2
