Song Of The Week - Highly Likely - Whatever Happened To You...
Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais created one of the greatest sitcoms ever – and indeed, one of the greatest sequels ever – with Whatever Happened To The Likely Lads? Their 1970s follow up to their 1960s original moved from the province of provincial young men, to a brilliant examination of the modern British man in early-onset midlife crisis. As funny as it was, Whatever…cut to the heart of the British class system, as well as male ego and male love in an era where such things were never really discussed, they just hung there in the silences between sups of your pint. Clement and La Frenais filled those silences brilliantly.
Naturally, such a great sitcom required one of the great TV themes of all time. The wistful Whatever Happened To You…graced the opening and end titles of the show for barely 30 seconds at a time. But La Frenais and his other cowriter Mike Hugg recorded this full-length version below under the name Highly Likely.
We play it today to mourn the passing of Rodney Bewes whose titantic performance as Bob Ferris gave British TV its first look at the aspirational male before we even knew what such a creature was. He also appeared in John Schlesinger’s era-defining Billy Liar and was Mr Rodney to Basil Brush – no small achievement either.
Rodney Bewes 1937-2017 RIP
