Coogan & Reilly's Stan & Ollie To Close LFF
Jon S Baird’s Stan & Ollie has been announced as the closing night film at this year’s BFI London Film Festival on October 21st. This will mark the movie’s world premiere and this first image – of Steve Coogan as Stan Laurel and John C Reilly as Oliver Hardy - has been released to mark the occasion. The film, written by Coogan’s Philomena collaborator Jeff Pope, follows the legendary comedy duo in their later days as they tour the music halls of England long after their time of cinematic glory is behind them. It is, according to Coogan, something of a love story.
This is what he told the London Evening Standard – “It doesn’t matter if you’re a fan of Laurel and Hardy or not, it’s basically a love story about two friends who in the end, in the autumn of their lives, the only constant is each other. That was the appeal, the story of a friendship. It’s a more interesting story. Conventional biopics are a bit boring. Oliver Hardy was kind of a sleeping partner, he was a funny man but Stan interested me because he was a tortured genius who loved comedy.”
Sound like anyone we know, Steve?
Stan & Ollie will screen at the LFF in central London, and will be simulcast to cinemas throughout the UK on the night, before opening in January of next year.
The BFI London Film Festival runs from October 10 - 21
