LFF 2018 Preview - The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From A Mythical Man

Dir: Tommy Avallone

Starring Bill Murray, Some Lesser Mortals

Avallone’s slight but very entertaining doc opens well – various groups of people gathered together (some of them even around a camp fire) to tell tales of a legendary figure. That figure of course turns out to be Bill Murray and the film follows the stories set up in that opening, now in real life, using photos, interviews  and video footage of the many stories that have grown up around Murray and his random appearances – crashing a party, tending bar, doing the washing up, having his photo taken with some newlyweds, and many more.

All of these urban legends appear to be real however, and Avallone interviews many of those that were there and their reminiscences are funny, honest and at times oddly touching.

If at times the director appears to be making a film as much about himself as his subject, then it’s something that is easy to forgive in light of the passion that Murray invokes.

One of the interviewees compares Bill to a unicorn. It’s a fair comparison. (One of the Last Word team met him once – shook his hand. Nothing else happened. “But it doesn’t matter.”)

The Bill Murray Stories plays the LFF on October 10, 11 & 20
