The Aeronauts - This Balloon Movie Just About Rocks

Dir: Tom Harper

Starring Felicity Jones, Eddie Redmayne, Himesh Patel, Tom Courtenay, Anne Reid, Rebecca Front, Robert Glennister

Like The Theory Of Everything but with balloons? Not really, but Redmayne does get to play another visionary scientist, this time a meteorologist in the 1850s. Inspired by true events, Redmayne’s James Glaisher wants to fly high in an attempt to learn how to predict the weather – a sort of Michael Fish without THAT hurricane. To this end he recruits hot air balloonist, aka aeronaut, Amelia Wren to take him higher than anyone has ever been before.

The film flits between their meeting and preparations, and the actual flight itself, which is vertiginously brought to life, and replete with various moments of well realised action beats, climbing up frozen balloons high in the atmosphere, dangling off the basket by ropes, losing the basket altogether, and so forth.

It all provides a solid old-fashioned family action adventure feel, led by strong performances all round, especially from the wonderful Jones, as the balloonist coming to terms with both a tragic past and her love for what she does.
