Bombshell - This Movie Rocks

Dir: Jay Roach

Starring Charlize Theron, Nicole Kidman, Margot Robbie, John Lithgow, Connie Britton, Rob Delaney, Kate McKinnon, Alison Janney, Malcolm McDowell

Jay Roach has already displayed his penchant for quick witted political pieces on TV with the likes of Game Change and All The Way. Now he finds a subject worthy of the big screen – albeit one which has already been successfully portrayed on the small. Russell Crowe recently brought former Fox News head Roger Ailes to chilling life in the superb The Loudest Voice. In Roach’s movie. Ailes is more marginalised and seen for the most part as an older man caught up in the world of #Me Too scandal, and superbly played by Lithgow.

In this take on the true life story, the emphasis is firmly on the women, with a powerhouse trio of Theron, Kidman and Robbie as the women – TV anchors and assistants – who accused the TV exec of sexual harassment and brought his fiefdom crumbling down.

As he has previously done when he gets the political bit between his teeth, Roach directs and delivers at a furious pace, mixing real/broadcast footage with his own, augmenting his lead cast with a slew of supporting all-star turns, McKinnon, Janney and Delaney amongst them. And Malcolm McDowell as Rupert Murdoch, no less.

But the film belongs to its three central female leads, who all deliver marvellous work, none more so than Robbie.

It lacks the overall sweep of the excellent Loudest Voice, but in focusing on the latter events of this story it makes itself a convincing, stylistically different companion piece.
