The Ridiculous 6 - This Netflix/Sandler Movie Does Not Rock

Dir: Frank Corachi

Starring Adam Sandler, Terry Crews, Jorge Garcia, Nick Nolte, Harvey Keitel, Luke Wilson, Rob Schneider, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro

For those of us that hoped Adam Sandler’s team-up with Netflix would lead to a return to form for the lately increasingly off the boil comedian – prepare to be disappointed. With his comic western, Sandler may well have Mel Brooks in his sights, but hits the target only slightly more than Seth MacFarlane.

Sandler himself is a white man raised by drastically stereotyped “injuns” who meets his real father (Nolte), and then sets off to rescue him. Along the way, he discovers his has five disparate – and desperate – siblings, amongst them the dreaded Rob Schneider, complete with (another) huge, bordering on racist stereotype (Mexican this time), Terry Crews who admits to being black for the first time, and a stupefyingly bad performance from Taylor Lautner, basically channelling Ben Stiller’s “full retard” from Tropic Thunder.

Bizarre references to Matthew McConaughey and failed Home Alone gags stick out like a sore thumb, but the film is not without some laughs – including Buscemi’s all-purpose barber, Keitel’s headless-but-still-shooting bad guy, Turturro inadvertently pointing out the absurdity of baseball, and, surprisingly, Vanilla Ice’s take on Mark Twain – “Satire!” indeed.

But overall, The Ridiculous 6 is badly paced and short on laughs. Something you couldn’t level at early Sandler.Plus, it walks too close to the edge of both racism and sexism – something combined in its depiction of “injun” women who bear such names as Smoking Fox, Beaver Breath, and Wears No Bra.

Sandler has three more movies left in his Netflix deal. Let’s hope somewhere along the way, Mr Sandler gets his groove back.

The Ridiculous 6 is currently streaming on Netflix.
