HEE's A Rising Star. So's ShEE

The BAFTA Awards have just announced their first nominations of this year – in the EE Rising Star category. Designed to shed light on the new, the young and the gifted, this year’s anointed five are –

John Boyega (The Force Awakens)

Brie Larson (Room)

Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades Of Grey)

Taron Egerton (Kingsmen)

Bel Powley (Diary of a Teenage Girl.)

Previous winners include the likes of Jack O’Connell, Tom Hardy, Eva Green, Will Poulter and James McAvoy, but given that one of those nominated this year is already starring in just about the biggest movie in this galaxy and others further afield, it’s difficult to say how much a career boost a win here would afford.

Nonetheless – let’s look at the odds: Larson is terrific in a movie that hasn’t even been seen in the UK yet (primary voting ground), Diary of A Teenage Girl was widely applauded but barely seen, Fifty Shades – was anyone watching it for the acting? and whilst Kingsmen was a decent sized hit and Egerton a very winning Eggsy, Boyega is in the biggest thing ever which just happens to be in cinemas right now and, as this is the only one of the BAFTAs to be voted for by you, the real people of the world – it’s might be easy to make a prediction here.

But you never know! So get out there and vote – from tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and we’ll see what happens.

Full BAFTA nominations to follow on Friday, and the EE BAFTA Awards are on February 14 – aka Valentine’s Day.
