Song Of The Week - Loudon Wainwright III - Tonya's Twirls
You wait ages for a Winter Olympics-themed movie to come along – yes, Eddie The Eagle, we mean you. And then…
So it looks like London’s finest Australian import Margot Robbie is gearing up to don ice skates and play notorious skate queen Tonya Harding, in I, Tonya. For those that don’t remember, Harding was a potential medal winner at the 1994 games, until she started taking a tyre iron to practice and her rival team mates both. (Wasn’t there a cheesy TV movie about this already? Actually, yes – 1994’s Tonya & Nancy – The Inside Story, with Alexandra Powers as Harding. Not great!)
Anyway, we’re pretty confident Robbie (turning producer here as well as lead) will deliver something worth looking at. And if you want to know more about the Tonya Harding story in general, then you might as well listen to Loudon’s peerless recapping of said events. Like everyone else, the man demonises her. Then, unlike anyone else, he finds a way to humanise here. As ever, the man proves himself a genius.
Hit “Play” already. Damn!
