Yesterday It Was Max. Today It's Carol. Can't These Awards People Agree On Anything?

Another day. Another awards announcement. And The New York Film Critics Circle have gone big time for Todd Haynes’ beautiful Carol. The pic picked up Best Pic, Director for Haynes, Screenplay for Phyllis Nagy’s take on Patricia Highsmith, and Cinematography for the luminous work of Edward Lachman. Blanchett and Mara might well have cancelled each other out making way for the brilliant-in-Brooklyn/brilliant-in-everything-else Saoirse Ronan to pick up the first of (hopefully) many wins (when Brie Larson isn’t tag teaming her), whist Michael Keaton stepped out of the ensemble and into the Spotlight to land Best Actor for…um…Spotlight.

Mark Rylance started to make his presence felt in the race with a Best Supporting nod for Bridge of Spies, whilst Supporting Actress provided something of a surprise with the all but forgotten till now Kristen Stewart walking away with said gong for her turn in Clouds of Sils Maria. We here at lastword have made no secret of our lack of interest in Stewart as an actress, but credit where credit’s due – she was terrific in that film (as she also was this year in Camp X-Ray) so we applaud this choice.

How indicative of the season still very much ahead these awards will turn out to be remains to be seen. But it’s worth noting that the NY critics displayed a distinctly NY bent – Carol is New York based, Bridge of Spies and Brooklyn are partially set in (ahem) Brooklyn, even Best Non-fiction Film went to local Jackson Heights.

On the other hand, Ennio Morricone picked up a special award for, well, just being Ennio Morricone (and still being alive.)

And Inside Out picked up Best Animated. Again! The one certainty this year.
