“Chewie – we’re home.” And so are we all.
There were always two things that were going to happen with the MOST ANTICIPATED THING EVER!!! Either it was going to disappoint such expectation, or it was going to exceed, but still be damned by the history it has to live up to. Truth, be told, JJ’s Episode VII fits into both those categories – but still manages to succeed spectacularly.
In light of the man’s own secrecy, and the fact that the trailers have shown hardly anything, and the fact that just about everyone in the world is off to see this any minute now, we’ll keep this mostly spoiler free. Safe to say, the second you hear that opening stab of John Williams’ glorious theme, all is right with the world. The opening scrawl reminds you that this is just another episode in an on-going Saturday morning serial – but easily one of the best. The first appearance of the Millennium Falcon is a stroke of genius, ditto the appearance of Han and Chewie. In fact, there are so many moments in this movie that echo what has gone before, that it could be in danger of being little more than self-reference. But JJ takes all these moments and makes them special. Yes, it’s meeting up with old friends – both literally and metaphorically – but it’s a delightful reunion on all fronts.
Plus, he has a cast that more than know what they’re doing. The old hands – obviously, Ford in particular (special mention for the Wookie also, who nails it.) But the newcomers as well – Driver still feels slightly miscast but can be lived with, whilst Ridley and Boyega are simply superb.
Oh, and BB-8 – who owns this!.
Episode VII – The Force Awakens is not so much a sequel. Not a reboot. Not a reinvention. It is, pure and simple, a reaffirmation.
Cinema from the ages. For the ages.
(Oh, a keep an ear out for Daniel Craig’s Stormtrooper.)
