How do you bring 22 movies and eleven years of ground-breaking, cinema-redefining filmmaking to a close? Pretty much like this.

Out of necessity, this review will be relatively brief, as it is true that the least you know about Endgame going in, the better it will be.

Suffice to say, it is epic filmmaking at the highest scale, brilliantly orchestrated and designed to focus as much on character as it does on blistering all-out action. Indeed, a good deal of the first hour or its three-hour running time (don’t worry, you won’t feel its length, it flies by) deals with a very palpable sense of loss (given the events of last year’s set up, Infinity War.) We spend considerable time with our central heroes, - with series’ best performances from all our mains - feeling their pain, seeing them change and develop (rare for a franchise movie on this scale,) and knowing that this is only the beginning.

Then it turns into a super referential heist movie that reminds us of all the joy and delight Marvel have brought us in the last decade, whilst also displaying just how much influence Taika Waititi has had over the MCU, (even in a relatively short time and only one movie – Ragnorak.). Yes – it’s funny, but there’s always a sense of both grandeur and humanity that even good gags can’t override.

And then – well, that’s as far as we go.

Save to say, you will find yourself cheering, you will find yourself crying. But, more than anything, you will find yourself deeply satisfied by the manner in which all those at Marvel have brought things to a genuine sense of both closure and renewal.

Endgame is, on just about every level, one hell of an achievement.

(And pity the poor sods who have to follow it!)
