Give Us Moore, Moore, Mooore

Bart Freundlich's Susanne Bier remake, After The Wedding, has just released its first trailer. We caught the movie a couple of weeks back at Sundance London. Here's what we had to say then -

Dir: Bart Freundlich

Starring Michelle Williams, Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup, Abby Quinn

Brad Freundlich remakes Suzanne Bier’s 2006 original, with a gender role reversal that offers a great role for his wife, Julianne Moore.

Williams is Isabel, the idealistic women running an orphanage in India, in which her children meditate, and feed those children less fortunate than them. Moore is Theresa, the extremely wealthy philanthropise who summons her to New York to discuss a sizeable donation/investment in her overseas work. When their business discussions get delayed, Theresa invites Isabel to her daughter Grace (Quinn)’s elaborate wedding that weekend. When Isabel arrives at the ceremony though, things take a distinctly unexpected turn (if you haven’t seen Bier’s original) and set in place life changing events that will disrupt and redefine both family and relationships.

Freundlich’s sincere film hinges on unexpected developments, which work extremely well here, and their aftermath –“after the wedding” as it were – and two fantastic central performances. Both lead actresses are at the top of their game, Moore slightly pulling ahead as the matriarch who finds her privileged, happy and controlled life falling apart on more than one level. Special mention should also be made of Crudup, who is as excellent here as he always his.

Heartfelt and moving, the film cleverly avoids the obvious moments of cliché it walks a fine line with.

After The Wedding opens August 9
