Fast and Furious Hobbs & Shaw - This Crazy Batshit Movie Rocks

Dir: David Leitch

Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Jason "The Stath" Statham, Vanessa Kirby

Remember when the Fast and Furious franchise was actually about cars? And street racing? Oh, and was endlessly wittering on about “family”? And was rubbish?? (F&F 1-4 BTW.)

And then it hit Fast Five (still the best one) and suddenly went mental and got good?

Well, Hobbs and Shaw – the first spin off from the main drag, (about to hit number 9) – kisses goodbye to any sense of reality – or even physics – and is totally batshit insane. And all the better for it.

The Rock and the Stath face off and team up both, running around the world tracking down the deadliest of deadly viruses which is injected into the body of Shaw’s sister (a splendidly powerful Kirby), all the while being pursued by the genetically enhanced “black Superman” that is Idris Elba – watch him fly through double decker busses, see him run down the side of buildings whilst carrying Kirby, try and work out how much of him is CGI (probably a lot!)

In the hands of John Wick and Atomic Blonde director Leitch, it’s all handled with a gravity – and logic – defying sense of both pace and grace, as well as a good deal of fun. Dwayne and Jason have an undeniable chemistry, Kirby more than holds her own, and Idris – well, the man just knows cool. Cameos abound – from Helen Mirren to Kevin Hart to Rob Delaney to Eddie Marsan to an unbilled Ryan Reynolds – and the film wisely understands that its humour is there to thrust its action forward rather than offer a break from it.

You may leave your brain at the door, but it’s reassuring to know the filmmakers have done anything but.
