The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel - This Movie Geriatrically Rocks
Dir: John Madden
Starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill NIghy, Dev Patel, Celia Imrie, Richard Gere, Tammy Greig, Ronald Pickup, Penelope Wilton
The first Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a delight, full of wonderful ageing actors, ageing wonderfully well, in a picture postcard view of India, with a decent collection of good gags and personal charm.
The Second Best one is, basically, more of the same. Only Tom Wilkinson didn’t make it out of the last one alive, but everyone else is here – the Dames, the Nighy, the Patel, the Imrie and more. Plus, they’ve chucked in Richard Gere to get some of the older pulses racing. The plot – such as it is – owes far too much of a debt to The Hotel Inspectors episode of Fawlty Towers (do they really think everyone’s memory starts to go at a certain pint?) But there are numerous sub plots and diversions, not least Dev Patel’s impending wedding, which culminates in what feels like another lift – this time from Slumdog Millionaire (do they really think everyone’s memory starts to…um…something…)
But it’s all very pleasant. Just like it was last time. Admittedly, not quite as pleasant – the unexpected charm has worn off a tad. But it’s hard not to love Maggie Smith telling Americans how to make a decent cup of tea. Or Bill Nighty– just being Bill Nighy.
Sweet, pleasant people to spend time with. We’ll probably all be meeting up again in a couple of years…unless one of them dies.
