Song Of The Week - David Bowie - Absolute Beginners
Some of us here at lastword spent last night hanging out with Julien Temple who very kindly showed us his new movie The Ecstasy of Wilko Johnson. And whilst Temple is the epitome of charm, as a filmmaker he moves from being deeply pretentious to incredibly insightful (Wilko review to follow.)
That said, it got us back to thinking about his big move away from pop video and documentary that was 1986’s Absolute Beginners. Derided at the time and labelled the movie that killed Palace Pictures, it is in both retrospect and reality a much better film than that. We wanted to show you that fantastic opening tracking shot – in which the Thin White Duke himself makes a brief appearance if memory serves - but were amazed to find it hasn’t been YouTubed. Instead here’s the video for what is simply one of the greatest and most undervalued songs in the Bowie cannon. We were tempted to call it one from his later period, but, given recent activity, we’re going with glorious “middle.”
Hit “Play” goddammit!
