Song Of The Week - Taylor Swift - Shake It Off
If Taylor Swift was the new Bob Dylan – and she’s not – but if she were, then this song would be her Positively 4th Street.
Back in 1965, at the height of his celebrity, Dylan wrote -
“You’ve got a lot of nerve, to say you are my friend/When I was down you just stood there grinning.”
Ms Swift meanwhile offers -
“Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.”
Dylan continued with –
“I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes/You’d know just what a drag it is to see you.”
Taylor responds with -
“Just think while you've been getting down and out about the liars and the dirty, dirty cheats of the world/You could've been getting down to this sick beat.”
In other words this is a "Fuck You!" song to rival the best of 'em, and proof positive that whilst pop music is capable of brilliant innovation and evolution, as someone once said – the song remains the same! 50 years on...
And this one rocks! Shake it off and hit Play!
(Film connection – she was the only good thing in New Year’s Day and showed up in The Giver – but coudn’t save it.)
