Song Of the Week - The Jam - Town Called Malice
Paul Weller is – apparently – to make his film debut. He’ll be taking some role (yet to be determined) alongside his old mucker Ray Winstone and Johnny Harris in a Brit boxing drama that was once titled The Ballad of Jimmy McCabe but now apparently is lacking a name.
Whilst we can’t imagine Woking’s finest having much of a speaking part – or even a boxing part (though he’s a lithe little beggar) – the good news is he will also be providing the soundtrack.
This song stems from the dying days of one of the great British bands to emerge from the punk/post-punk moment we had a few years back. The Jam (at Weller’s behest) proved more than anything that they knew how to quit when they were ahead. The ridiculously sublime Town Called Malice went straight in at number 1 all the way back in February of 1982, and the band played their farewell gigs at Wembley shortly afterwards. And never looked back.
That – and this – pure class.
Hope the same can be said for his acting debut!
Just so you know – the song has also helped soundtrack the likes of Billy Elliot (best scene in the film), The Matador and National Lampoon’s European Vacation.
