Song Of The Week - Liza Minnelli - Maybe This Time (Cabaret) |
Cabaret is simply one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made. Hell, it’s one of the greatest movies ever made. It’s such a brilliant evocation of the rise of fascism and its relationship to gang culture and bullying that it should be taught pre-emptively in schools up and down the world. Plus it has one of the greatest collections of songs in town, beautifully directed by Bob Fosse in his prime – so good it went head to head with The Godfather at the 1973 Oscars – and walked away with 8 of ‘em. Joel Grey beat Pacino for Best Supporting, Fosse trounced Coppola, but none was more deserving than Liza with a Zed. Of all her standout numbers in the movie, this is the one that nailed it. Tomorrow belonged to her – never was her mother more in evidence, never did she allow herself to be more exposed in a performance. Pure and simple genius.
