Song Of The Week - Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boy

Taken us a while to get round to Ms. Levigne’s paean to all things boards and guitars. But we’re sure you’ll agree it was worth the wait.

Not only is this a totally wonderful 3 mins of pop heaven, it’s also the only song we can think of  written in the future tense, the present tense and the past tense all in the one verse!! And no, we don’ think Avril and her co-writers were being clever – we suspect they probably didn’t even realise just how Back To The Future they were. And on top of all its Einsteinian notions – it’s got a good beat and you can dance to it (as they used to say back in the ‘60s.)

Reminds you of the time when My Space was a thing.

And proof that Converse and “too much eyes” (as The Jesus and Mary Chain would say) never go out of fashion.

Film connection? There were lots of sk8er boys in the legendary Christian Slater opus Gleaming The Cube, Keira Knightley (apparently her mum spelt it wrong) was a deeply unconvincing Sk8er Girl in last year’s Laggies, and Avril herself – she briefly appeared in the soon to be Oscar winning (!) Richard Linklater’s Fast Food Nation (opposite Bruce Willis), and provided a voice for the animated Over The Hedge (opposite Bruce Willis.) Plus, she might actually have met Bruce Willis…
