Directors Like Alfonso
Last night the Directors Guild of America named Alfonso Cuaraon as their number one for Roma. No stranger to award wins this season, our old friend Alfonso now looks a dead cert for the BAFTA and the Oscar. Elsewhere, the DGA gave their recently inaugurated First Time Feature Film to Bo Burnham’s excellent Eighth Grade and Best Documentary to Three Identical Strangers (yes, all three of ‘em.)
In a busy weekend for awards – Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse won seven awards including Best Animated Feature at the annual Annies, whilst the Art Directors Guild awarded gongs to The Favourite, Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians for Best Period, Fantasy and Contemporary Film, respectively.
That said, moving back to the DGA - our favourite win for the night was not for a movie, but for an advert. Spike Jonze hasn't made a film for far too long, but every now and then he gives us one of these amazing mini films, such as his collaboaration with FKA Twigs to push the Apple HomePod. Please see below - and Spike - please make another movie. Soon.
