You Wait Years For One Pinocchio Movie To Come Along...
After man yyears of trying, Guillermo Del Toro is finally to realise his dream of bringing Pinocchio to life on screen. His version will be a stop motion animated musical for Netflix, his first directing gig since bagging the Oscar for The Shape Of water.
He had this to say for himself on announcing - “No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”
Guillermo’s version will be set in proto-fascist Italy under the rise of Mussolini. The recently announced Disney live action remake of their animated classic – to be helmed by Paddington’s Paul King – is likely to find itself a less oppressive background setting.
Having been preparing for years however, Guillermo is ready to move into production this year, working in collaboration with both The Henson Company and the model team behind The Corpse Bride.
With Pinocchio one of Disney’s finest (and most disturbing) movies, colour us excited about BOTH versions.
