Roma Takes First Blood

Although it has not always proved to be the best indicator of how the Oscars will play out, and can often be wilfully idiosyncratic, the New York Film Critics Circle are the first serious awards of the season and they are clearly placing Roma in the lead, awarding it Best Picture and Best Director and Cinematography for Alfonso Cuaron.

Ethan Hawke too is becoming a presence in the season. Having already won Best Actor at the earlier Gotham Awards, he picked up the same title again in NYC.

The big surprise of the night was Regina King taking Best Actress (for the not-too-good Support The Girls) AND Best Supporting Actress (for If Beale Street Could Talk.)

Other good news from the night was Richard E. Grant starting his journey to the Oscars by claiming Best Supporting Actor. Spider-Man Into The Spider Verse surprised many by taking Best Animated Film, ahead of favourites such as The Incredibles 2 and Isle Of Dogs.
