And Finally - Uncle Oscar Lays Out His Wares

The 89th Academy Awards have finally come out into the open – and as expected La La Land is leading the pack with a record equalling 14 nominations (including two for Best Song.) It’s joined in the Best Film category with the expected Moonlight, Manchester By The Sea, Arrival, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Fences and Lion. (They went for nine out of a possible ten – sorry, Deadpool.) The other great news is – Mel’s back! He’s nominated for Best Director, Best Film and Andrew Garfield for Best Actor. Mel joins La La’s Chazelle, Jenkins for Moonlight, Lonergan for Manchester and Villeneuve for Arrival in the Directing category. Garfield meanwhile faces off against Gosling, Viggo, Affleck the younger (presumed winner) and Denzel in the Best Actor camp. The overrated Meryl landed her record busting 20th nom, joined in Best Actress by Stone, Portman, Huppert and the unexpected Ruth Negga.

Things we liked – Michael Shannon is there for Nocturnal Animals (wisely in place of Aaron Taylor-Johnson), Mike Mills’ great screenplay for 20th Century Women has been noted, My Life As A Zucchini (or Courgette if you will) is up for Best Animated (though no Pixar shock for Dory!!), and old friend of the site Guy Hendrix Dyas has been nommed for his excellent Production Design work on Passengers.

Our only serious moan? A profound lack of Hugh Grant! And no Amy Adams for Arrival!

And one thing we can all agree on – really don’t like the new, non-live protracted announcement.
