Has SAG Upset The Obvious?

Ever since we saw Hidden Figures a couple of months back, we’ve had a feeling that if anything could upset the obvious this year – this was the one. And last night, it sort of did that by picking up Best Ensemble at the Screen Actors Guild awards. True, it wasn’t up against a non-nominated La La – which was considered more of a two-hander than an ensemble – but it proved there’s a lot of love out there for this movie, and SAG’s big one has tallied with the Oscar 11 times in the last 21 years, most recently with the last two wins for Birdman and Spotlight.

Emma Stone still took Best Actress though and Viola Davis and Mahershala Ali both took their expected Best Supporting statues. The big surprise was Denzel beating Casey and finally landing a gong for Fences. The actor graciously admitted in his speech “I said that young boy’s gonna win, Denzel, you ain’t gonna win.”
