Song Of The Year - Number 1 - David Bowie - Blackstar
Admittedly, this dropped in late 2015, but this song, and the remarkable album it gave name to took on a huge new level of significance a mere three days after it arrived in the world, when Bowie departed same. Little did he know he was heralding in a year that would only get worse and worse, something that back in January, with his tragic passing, we thought would be impossible.
Here’s what we had to say about it at the time, which is strangely prophetic but still bang on the money –
“Every now and then someone releases a single that reminds you of the fact that releasing a single used to mean something It used to be an event. It was something you lived for. Waited for. Like Christmas. Thankfully, David Bowie chucking something new out into the world to remind us he isn’t dead, still has that power. It’s important. And, in this case, absolutely brilliant.
You’ve got to admire a man who in this day and age still makes hugely ambitious and often baffling videos. No, it’s not just him on a stage belting it out, this is…Christ know what. But it’s fun. And it’s him.
We should all be grateful that we live in a world where this man still releases singles like they mean something. He is the great I am. David Bowie. Now more than ever.”
So, RIP to Mr Jones, and here’s to 2017. It’s not like it can get any worse, is it?
Here’s wishing all our readers a Cautious Christmas and a Better New Year!
Oh, and hit “Play” already. Damn!
