After All That Horseplay, Denzel Gets Serious
Even before it’s been seen, Denzel’s adaptation of August Wilson’s award winning play (Denzel directs as well as stars) was thrown into the ring as both a serious Awards season contender – and one of those films being labelled this year as the antidote to the OscarsSoWhite issues of last.
That’s a lot to live up to but Washington knows the role of the troubled black father struggling to raise his family in the racially charged America of the 1950s, having already played it several times on stage.
Viola Davis as his long-suffering wife is also drawing strong word – but nobody’s seen it! This stuff just happens this time of year.
Fences makes it US debut on Christmas Day
