Rough Night - This Balls Out R-Rated Movie Wouldn't Know Rocks If It Accidentally Killed It During A Hen Do (Think That's Laboured? See The Film!)
Dir: Lucia Aniello
Starring Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Zoe Kravitz, Ilana Glazer, Paul W Downs, Demi Moore, Ty Burrell
Here’s the short version – Rough Night? Yes it was.
Here’s the slightly longer version – it’s not very good. In fact, it’s not any good. The post-Bridesmaid train rolls on in a desperate attempt to prove that women can make film as raucous, rude and R-rated as men. What Rough Night proves is that yes women can make movies equal to those made by men, because this is easily as bad as both Hangover sequels, both Horrible Bosses, and many more of the current “extreme” (used to be “gross out”) ilk.
What Rough Night also does is completely waste Scarlett Johansson, and – and we weren’t sure this was possible – make Kate McKinnon look bad! No mean feat both.
It’s a hen do in Florida with a dead stripper movie, that has clearly seen a Very Bad Things/Weekend At Bernies adouble bill nd only taken away enough from both of those to come up with “Very Bad Weekend”, which is how this feels, despite only running for 101 minutes. During that time you will witness approximately one joke that works (opening a champagne bottle in an airport – already in the trailer), a series of increasingly asinine sub plots (one protracted one involving co-writer Downs giving a dreadful performance as Johansson’s betrothed, and adult diapers) and very little else of note.
Hang on, change that - nothing else of note.
