Jojo Rabbit - This Nazi Comedy Movie Rocks - To Bowie & The Beatles
Dir: Taika Waititi
Starring Roman Griffin Davis, Thomasin McKenzie, Taika Waititi, Scarlett Johansson, Rebel Wilson, Sam Rockwell, Alfie Allen, Stephen Merchant
Taika Waititi’s WWII satire starts with The Beatles’ German version of I Want To Hold Your Hand – and it had us at hello. Aggressively funny and bitingly relevant, Waititi himself takes the role of Hitler, imagined best friend to Jojo (Davis), a young boy caught up in the Nazi youth movement, and finding himself out of his depth. Especially when he discovers his mother (a splendid Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl, Anne Frank-style, within the walls of their own home.
It is at times a brutal coming of age tale, at others a brilliantly funny piece of absurdism. Always sharp, and never dull, it is a modern piece that looks at ancient racism and finds the means to make fun of both.
And it ends with the phrase "Fuck off Hitler!" and two kids dancing to David Bowie in 1945 – none more aposite, and quite simply the best ending of any film this year!
